Hair Loss
-------------------------
Propecia
Propecia's claim to fame
is to maintain. 83% of men studied were able to maintain their
original follicle count, and 64% experienced regrowth after 2 years.
Propecia does this by inhibiting the creation of DHT in your system.
DHT is a naturally
occurring hormone which assists with sexual development in males
during fetal development and puberty. When a man begins to
undergo that second "change of life", DHT becomes some
hair follicles' worst enemy. Follicles at the front, top, and
upper back of the head in most men are genetically programmed to
become susceptible to DHT at some point in the man's life.
Those hairs which cover the sides and bottom back of the head
typically are not, which is why most men do not lose hair in these
areas.
During hair loss, DHT
begins to treat your follicles as foreign objects in your body.
Similar to an auto-immune response, it slowly begins to reject the
follicles. During this time there typically is increased Sebum
production which can lead to excessive itching and scarring.
All of these things contribute greatly to why men begin to lose
hair. This is also an extremely long process, and the cycles
for hair growth are typically about 3-9 months. Without a DHT
inhibitor either systemically (in the bloodstream) or locally in the
scalp, each time your hair cycles, the follicle will become thinner,
shorter, and ultimately it will not grow back in.

What's
all the Hub-bub about?
If
someone were to tell you that you had an 83%
chance of keeping all the hair you currently
have today by taking one pill one time a
day, would you do it? With a
Prop (finasteride)
prescription, it's not only a possibility,
it's becoming a reality for hundreds of
thousands of men.
Rather
than fill your brain with all the medical
jargon, we are going to give you in layman's
terms exactly how this treatment works, how
well it works, what its side
effects
are, and where you can buy it.

The
Study
Merck
conducted a two year clinical trial, in which 1,553
men ages 18 to 41 with mild to moderate thinning /
balding at the top of the head took this treatment
daily. At the 2 year mark, 83% of them had maintained
their hair (based on hair count) and 66% of them had
experienced regrowth. A side assessment by the doctors
in the study rated 80% of men as improved, at the end
of the period.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)
 | Minoxidil's
claim to fame is stimulating growth. 59% experienced
increased hair-count after 4 months of use. Minoxidil does
not inhibit one of the main causes of thinning hair, DHT.
However, a combination regimen of Minoxidil and Propecia
together are known to be probably the most effective treatment
available today.
I
Time
Tested...baldy approved
In 1988,
Pharmacia & Upjohn Company introduced the first FDA-approved
product proven to regrow hair. Since 1996, in light of their
excellent safety profile, Rogaine Regular Strength for Men and
Rogaine for Women have been sold as over-the-counter (non
prescription) drugs. Rogaine extra strength is now sold over the
counter as well. It is a clear solution you apply to the
top of your scalp where hair is thinning.
Rogaine is
available as a pre-mixed product created by Upjohn, but you can
very easily obtain the active ingredients in generic versions of
this product. We have made this accessible for you at the
bottom of this page.
What exactly is
it?
Minoxidil in its
2% form has been approved for use in both Men and Women, however
the 5% mixture has just recently been approved for over the
counter distribution, but is only for use in Men.
Minoxidil is an ingredient which works to stimulate the hair
follicles into growth. It is safe to say that the 5%
version is the strongest regrowth product available over the
counter, while the 2% is something you may wish to start with if
you're just starting to experience balding.
Once again it is
important to pace yourself with hair loss treatments. As
with any treatment, you run the risk of it losing its
effectiveness over time, so start light, see if it works, then
increase to 5% if you are not seeing the results you want.
Pros and Cons
If you're like
most people, the big question is "Where do I start?"
Trying to decide the answer to this question is one of the
toughest because starting something means a major commitment.
So the two major players are Propecia and Minox. Here are
some benefits of Minox over Propecia:
|
 | You can buy
Minoxidil without Prescription, whereas Propecia requires one
| | Minox works locally,
and since it is a topical, its systemic (internal) effects are
minimal, whereas Propecia directly alters the Male Hormonal
system.
 | Minox in its 2% form
is safe for use in both Men *and* Women, whereas Propecia is only
for use in Men |
 |
Propecia
and Minoxidil, the Ultimate Combination
If you are looking
to kick start some regrowth, and maintain what you have, but have
had no success on other treatments, or on Propecia or Rogaine
alone, combining them is a sure way to optimize your results.
